چکیده

WARNING: UNRECOGNIZED HYPOGLYCEMIA RESULTING FROM DRUG-DEVICE INTERACTION See full prescribing information for complete boxed warning • Use of non-specific glucose monitors has resulted in falsely elevated glucose readings due to maltose interference leading to inappropriate insulin administration or withholding of hypoglycemia treatment. Permanent neurological damage and death have been reported. (5.1) • Only use glucose-specific monitoring systems in patients using EXTRANEAL (see glucosesafety.com). (5.1) • Blood glucose monitoring devices using glucose dehydrogenase pyrroloquinolinequinone (GDH-PQQ), glucose-dye-oxidoreductase (GDO), or some glucose dehydrogenase flavin-adenine dinucleotide (GDH-FAD)-based methods must not be used. (5.1) • Falsely elevated glucose levels may be measured up to two weeks following cessation of EXTRANEAL therapy. (5.1, 12.3) • Educate all patients to alert health care providers of this interaction whenever they are admitted to the hospital. (5.1, 17) • Because of the risk of unrecognized hypoglycemia that could result from drug-device interaction, EXTRANEAL is available only through a restricted program. (5.2)

Effects of icodextrin peritoneal dialysis solution on the peritoneal membrane in the STZ-induced diabetic rat model with partial nephrectomy.

BACKGROUND Application of icodextrin-based peritoneal dialysis fluid (PDF) provides a potential benefit in patients with diabetes and end-stage renal failure treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) because of better ultrafiltration capacity and avoidance of direct glucose exposure. We examined the effect of glucose and icodextrin-based PDF on histological alterations of pe...

Ultrafiltration efficiency during automated peritoneal dialysis using glucose-based solutions.

The ultrafiltration (UF) efficiency of peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions, defined as the net UF divided by the amount of carbohydrate absorbed per dwell, has been shown to be higher during long dwells with 7.5% icodextrin solution (Extraneal: Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Deerfield, IL, U.S.A.) than during those with glucose-based solution (2.5% and 4.25% Dianeal: Baxter Healthcare Corporatio...

Icodextrin does not impact infectious and culture-negative peritonitis rates in peritoneal dialysis patients: a 2-year multicentre, comparative, prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND Icodextrin is a glucose polymer derived by hydrolysis of cornstarch. The different biocompatibility profile of icodextrin-containing peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions may have a positive influence on peritoneal host defence. Furthermore, cases of sterile peritonitis potentially associated with icodextrin have been reported. METHODS The primary objective of this multicentre, longit...

Clinical effects of a peritoneal dialysis regimen low in glucose in new peritoneal dialysis patients: a randomized crossover study.

Standard glucose-based peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions have unfavorable effects on the peritoneum and contribute to metabolic abnormalities. A PD regimen in which solutions with an alternative osmotic agent (icodextrin, amino acids) and solutions with a bicarbonate/lactate buffer are combined may reduce those effects. In a prospective crossover study, we randomized new continuous ambulatory ...

Hypertonic glucose-based peritoneal dialysate is associated with higher blood pressure and adverse haemodynamics as compared with icodextrin.

BACKGROUND Little is known about the haemodynamic effects of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) despite its widespread use in the management of end-stage renal failure. We undertook a study to delineate the haemodynamic effects of CAPD using glucose-containing fluids (1.36 and 3.86% glucose) and icodextrin. METHODS Eight CAPD patients were recruited for a prospective crossover s...
